From workshop to institute

Project Overview

The City of Wilmington has transferred five East Side parcels to AAHI — including 1039 and 1043 Clifford Brown Walk — to house a program incubator and a full state-of-the-art heritage institute.

1039 Clifford Brown Walk — The Workshop

The rowhouse at 1039 Clifford Brown Walk will undergo a major capital renovation — including upgrades like Wi-Fi to accommodate 21st-century technology and improvements to be ADA compliant. The newly renovated 1039 Workshop will house AAHI program delivery of educational and cultural-based, high-tech, high-touch services to youth and Eastside residents, and to those joining online across the county, state, and country.

1043 Clifford Brown Walk — The Institute

AAHI will redevelop the former Allied Kid Building at 1043 Clifford Brown Walk — to be known as the African American Heritage Institute — to comprehensively deliver its onsite programs and services. A Certificate Program in Oral History will promote stronger integrated content across a range of study areas including social studies, language and performing arts, and journalism. Certificate courses will be delivered in a hybrid curriculum, onsite at the AAHI Institute and in a virtual setting.
